Demonic! The MA-01, first mid-engined car in automotive history, allows its creator to win, in 1952, the 20 races he participates !
Otto Mathé, Austrian-born racing driver, awesome engineering mechanic and friend of Ferry Porsche, so built this car from VW factory parts and with a Porsche engine he knows well, having previously shown at the wheel of the famous Type 64, before moving on to the 356. In addition to his racing career (over 50 victories to his credit), he built this terrible machine which not only allows him to beat the other DIY enthusiasts, but also official factory cars and the most famous drivers of the era: Hans Stuck, Huschke von Hanstein and Richard von Frankenberg. All this with one arm, having lost the other in a motorcycle race. Which earned him the nickname "teufelskerl" (demon) and that of his car "Fetzenflieger" literally (and affectionately) the rags flyer. Although with 130 HP to 400 kg, and technical solutions as radical as the short frame, central motor and perforated aluminum body (on the carburetor), there was great potential !
Otto Mathé drove his car until the end of his career in 1959 (on the frozen Lake Zeller See, where he beats the official Porsche Team), but one can soon find his mark, since he is behind the Porsche 718/2 project the same year !
