Porsche Experimental Prototype, or short P.E.P., was the designation for a multifunctional test car of the Porsche factory in 1985. The term “Experimental” made the big difference to other pre-production cars. Contrary to ready-built prototypes, which were built as close as possible to the later on production version and often had to be multiply modified due to individual alternations, P.E.P was distinctly different. It was created to empirically test a wide range of different components and their interaction concurrently.

P.E.P was not built like a usual car, it featured four combinable modules that were universally changeable. The Chassis – designated as Propulsion Module, the driver’s cab – named Central Module and the Front and Back Module. The Central Module was assembled with a range of production components form various Porsche models and was also the module on which the other modules were fitted to.

P.E.P. was specifically designed and built to test the handling of the car with different drive systems and different weight distribution. P.E.P.’s basic drivetrain powered all four wheels but it was also laid out so that the car could be only front- or rear driven. Additionally it was possible to adjust the wheelbase of the test car. The multifunctional structure of the concept was such sophisticated that it was even possible to fit the engine in the front instead of in the rear.

Porsche Experimental Prototyp, kurz P.E.P. – das war 1985 die Bezeichung eines mulitfunktionalen Versuchswagens im Porsche-Werk. Im Wort Experimental lag dabei der große Unterschied zu anderen Vorserienfahrzeugen. Im Gegensatz zu komplett aufgebauten Einzelprototypen, die meistens wegen individueller Änderungen mehrfach modizifiert werden mussten, war der P.E.P. als Lösungsansatz gedacht, um möglichst viele Bauteile unabhängig voneinander zu bewerten und aber auch, um das individuelle Zusammenspiel unterschiedlicher Komponenten empirisch erheben zu können.

Der P.E.P. Versuchwagen besaß kein klassisches Chassis, sondern bestand aus vier kombinierbaren Modulen, die universell geändert werden konnten. Das Fahrwerk - bezeichnet als Antriebsmodul -, die Fahrerkabine - genannt Zentralmodul -, sowie das Hinterrad- und das Vorderradmodul. Dem aus diversen Porscheteilen zusammengesetzten Zentralmodul als Fahrerkabine kam dabei hautpsächlich eine tragende Funktion zu, an die alle anderen Module festgeschraubt wurden.

Der Versuchsträger wurde in erster Linie für das Erzielen neuer Erfahrungen in Bezug auf die Massenverteilung an einem Porsche konstruiert. Die Veränderung der Gewichtsverteilung konnte durch Verschieben des Motors, der Wahl von All- auf reinen Front- oder Heckantrieb, einer Veränderung des Achsabstandes und weiterer Variationsmöglichkeiten an der Motor-Getriebeeinheit erreicht werden. Der multifunktionale Aufbau des Konzepts war derart ausgeklügelt, dass es sogar möglich war, den Motor statt im Heck in der Front einzubauen.

Le terme «expérimental» faisait toute la différence par rapport aux autres voitures de pré-production. Contrairement aux prototypes prêts à l'emploi, construits le plus proche possible d’une version finale et devant souvent faire l'objet de plusieurs modifications en raison d'alternances individuelles, P.E.P était vraiment différent.

Il a été créé pour tester de manière empirique et simultanément une large gamme de composants différents et leurs interactions. P.E.P n’était pas construit comme une voiture ordinaire. Elle comportait quatre modules modifiables et combinables universellement. Le châssis - appelé module de propulsion, la cabine de conduite - nommée module central et les modules avant et arrière. Le module central, assemblé avec une gamme de composants de différents modèles Porsche, était celui sur lequel les autres modules s’adaptaient.

P.E.P. était spécialement conçu et construit pour tester le comportement de la voiture avec différents systèmes d’entraînement et différentes répartitions de masses. La transmission à quatre roues motrices était de base sur P.E.P., mais elle pouvait être modifiée en traction ou propulsion. Il était également possible de régler l’empattement de la voiture d’essai. La structure multifonctionnelle du concept était si sophistiquée qu'il était même possible de placer le moteur à l'avant plutôt qu'à l'arrière.
