Real Model – Porsche 944 1981 Grams28 Mars Rover

The Porsche 944 was unveiled in 1981 and went on sale in 1982 as a significantly sportier evolution of the 924. Produced until 1991, it belongs to Porsche’s "transaxle" era: the engine is front-mounted, while the gearbox is positioned at the rear axle. This layout contributes to a near-balanced weight distribution and accounts for much of the stability and handling precision for which the car is renowned. The 944 also features flared fenders, a more muscular body than the 924, and a practical rear hatch, all while retaining the low-slung silhouette of a 2+2 coupé.

The first-generation 944 is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine developed entirely by Porsche. Equipped with two counter-rotating balance shafts, it runs more smoothly than a conventional four-cylinder engine. In its initial European specification, the engine produces 163 hp and 205 Nm of torque, paired with a five-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. Weighing approximately 1,180 kg, the Porsche 944 can accelerate to 100 km/h in around 7.9 seconds and reach a top speed of approximately 220 km/h.

A total of 173,238 Porsche 944s were produced. The lineup subsequently expanded to include Turbo, S, S2, and Cabriolet versions, as well as 2.5, 2.7, and 3.0-liter engines. The car reproduced here is not a standard production 944; instead, it serves as the basis for a highly customized, contemporary interpretation inspired by the "Mars Rover" project.

Miniature – Porsche 944 1981 Grams28 Mars Rover Grey 1/64 Tarmac Works (T64S-018-G28)

This 1:64 scale Tarmac Works miniature depicts the Porsche 944 Mars Rover, the result of a collaboration with GRAMS28 and automotive photographer Jonny Roams. Bearing the reference number T64S-018-G28, it is part of the Tarmac Works Global64 collection. Finished in grey, it does not aim to replicate a standard Porsche 944; instead, it presents a radically modified version with the look of an exploration vehicle inspired by a Martian setting.

The transformation is defined by its off-road configuration, featuring oversized wheels and tires, increased ground clearance, widened bodywork, and expedition-specific accessories. The 944’s recognizable silhouette—long, sloping hood, rear-set cabin, pop-up headlights, and raked hatch—is deliberately juxtaposed with a futuristic rover aesthetic. This contrast between a 1980s German sports coupe and a vehicle designed for extraterrestrial landscapes creates the miniature's unique visual appeal.
