Real Model – Renault 12 Gordini 1971

Launched in 1970, the Renault 12 Gordini was the spiritual successor to the Renault 8 Gordini, yet it adopted a radically different formula. While the R8 Gordini was a small, rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive car, the R12 Gordini was a four-door family sedan featuring a longitudinally mounted front engine and front-wheel drive. Nevertheless, Renault and Amédée Gordini transformed it into a genuine, accessible sports car capable of serving as a base for racing and the famous Gordini Cup. It thus became Renault’s first front-wheel-drive competition car to achieve such a level of performance.

Under the hood, the R12 Gordini featured the aluminum 807-20 four-cylinder engine derived from the Renault 16 TS. With a displacement of 1,565 cc, it was fed by twin dual-choke Weber carburetors and developed 113 DIN hp at 6,250 rpm—equivalent to 125 SAE hp by the standards of the time. Mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, it drove the front wheels and allowed the car to reach a top speed of 185 km/h. Weighing approximately 910 kg, the car delivered remarkable performance for a French sedan of the early 1970s.

The Renault 12 Gordini is instantly recognizable by its "Blue de France" bodywork, twin longitudinal white stripes, sporty wheels, and deliberately bold appearance. Its chassis featured modified suspension, ventilated front disc brakes, and rear disc brakes. On the bumper-less version—offered for more spirited driving—the absence of bumpers further reduced weight and gave the car an even more radical look. Today, the R12 Gordini remains an iconic car from the golden age of accessible French sports cars, celebrated as much for its character as for its significance in rally racing and one-make racing series.

Miniature – Renault 12 Gordini 1971 Blue de France / White Stripes 1/18 Norev (185248)

This 1:18 scale Norev model reproduces the 1971 Renault 12 Gordini in its iconic "Blue de France" livery. Reference 185248 represents the bumperless version—a stripped-back configuration that highlights the car's racing pedigree. It captures the key features of this French sports car: blue bodywork, twin white stripes, distinctive wheels, front driving lights, a small front air dam, and the classic four-door sedan silhouette adapted for high performance.

Crafted from die-cast metal with plastic detailing, this Norev model features three opening parts: the two front doors and the hood, which reveals a detailed engine replica. The front wheels are steerable, enhancing its display appeal and allowing for dynamic posing.

The interior also boasts specific detailing, including a three-spoke steering wheel and seats that reflect the sporty spirit of the R12 Gordini. With its bumperless design, "Blue de France" finish, and white stripes, this model captures a particularly evocative version of the Renault 12 Gordini—perfect for collectors of sporty Renaults, 1970s French cars, and 1:18 scale Norev models.
