Real Model – BMW 320i E21 Turbo Gr. 5 n° 50 – 24h Le Mans 1977
The Group 5 BMW 320i Turbo entered in the 1977 24 Hours of Le Mans was a race car derived from the BMW 3 Series E21—the first generation of the "3 Series" family, launched in 1975. Prepared according to the spectacular Group 5 regulations, it retained only a few visual elements of the road-going model; its massively flared fenders, prominent rear wing, aerodynamic appendages, and radically transformed silhouette turned it into a true endurance racing machine. It was powered by a front-mounted, four-cylinder turbo engine producing approximately 300 hp in its Le Mans configuration.
Carrying race number 50 at the 1977 24 Hours of Le Mans, this vehicle became the third BMW Art Car. The concept of these artistic automobiles originated with French auctioneer and racing driver Hervé Poulain. Following the BMW 3.0 CSL—decorated by Alexander Calder and raced at Le Mans in 1975—Poulain commissioned American artist Roy Lichtenstein to transform this BMW 320i Turbo into a rolling work of art.
Roy Lichtenstein, a major figure in American Pop Art, did not simply apply a decorative livery to the bodywork. He designed a graphic scheme that conveys movement: long lines evoke roads and speed, while the famous Ben-Day dots—drawn from his visual vocabulary inspired by comic books and advertising imagery—sweep across the car's surfaces. Both sides also feature suns—one rising, the other setting—serving as a direct reference to the unfolding of the 24-hour race. Driven by Hervé Poulain and Marcel Mignot, the BMW Art Car finished ninth overall in the 1977 24 Hours of Le Mans, despite technical issues. This result confirmed that the car was far more than a mere exhibit: Lichtenstein’s BMW 320i Turbo truly took on the endurance challenge, forging an enduring link between the histories of BMW Motorsport, Le Mans, and contemporary art.
Miniature – BMW 320i E21 Turbo Gr.5 n° 50 9th 24h Le Mans 1977 Art Car Roy Lichtenstein 1/43 Norev (80425B54CD2)
This 1:43 scale Norev model reproduces the Group 5 BMW 320i E21 Turbo (No. 50) entered in the 1977 24 Hours of Le Mans, featuring the livery designed by Roy Lichtenstein. It bears the BMW reference number 80425B54CD2 and is part of the official BMW Art Car collection.
At this scale, the model captures the race car's dramatic presence: flared fenders, front air dam, large rear wing, racing wheels, and the number 50. The Pop Art livery is the centerpiece of the reproduction, featuring colored lines suggesting movement through a landscape, Ben-Day dot patterns, and sun motifs on the doors. It thus replicates a car where the bodywork is an integral part of Lichtenstein’s artwork, rather than merely a canvas for graphics.
Designed for collectors, this model appeals equally to enthusiasts of historic BMWs and motorsport, and to collectors of BMW Art Cars and Pop Art-related works.
