The idea of entering a NASCAR car in the Innovative Car category of the 24 Hours of Le Mans seemed ludicrous, but the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 rose to the challenge of the 24 Hours of Le Mans Centennial. This car wowed the 325,000 spectators with its aggressive look and the sound of its 680-hp 5.5-liter V8. With the help of drivers Jimmie Johnson, seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, Jenson Button, 2009 Formula 1 world champion, and Mike Rockenfeller, two-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the #24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 exposed the spirit of NASCAR to endurance fans. The car, without doors or spoilers, was a resounding success. Her times consistently placed her ahead of the LMGTE Am field. She held this position for over 20 hours until gearbox problems kept her off the track for over an hour.
