The first-generation Ford Mustang was launched in April 1964 and immediately became a huge commercial success, exceeding one million units produced by 1966. Designed as an affordable and customizable "pony car," it incorporated technical elements from the Ford Falcon while offering a sporty design (long hood, set-back cabin, short trunk) and a wide range of engines, from the modest 6-cylinder to the powerful 289 ci V8.
The 1966 model year, shown here in its coupe (Hardtop) version, is one of the most iconic: it is the archetype of the classic Mustang, predating the more significant evolutions of the late 1960s. The car embodies the "American dream" of the baby boomers, with an image of freedom, popular US culture, and a huge presence in the media, advertising, and film.
