The Mercedes-Benz W126 S-Class—produced from 1979 to 1991—is the second generation of the S-Class and is regarded as a true Mercedes classic, available in both short-wheelbase (SE) and long-wheelbase (SEL) sedan versions. At the top of the range, the 560 SEL featured a 5.6-liter V8 engine paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission, delivering up to 300 hp depending on whether or not a catalytic converter was fitted.
AMG, which was still an independent company at the time, offered extensive modifications based on the 560 SEL, including the legendary 6.0 AMG. This model featured an M117 engine bored out to 6.0 liters, specialized four-valve-per-cylinder heads, and an output of around 370–385 hp—providing significantly more torque than the standard model. Produced in very limited numbers (fewer than 200 units), these 560 SEL 6.0 AMG models became true "Autobahn kings," capable of exceeding 300 km/h; today, they are considered icons of the ultra-high-performance luxury sedan segment.
