At the early 70's, Porsche established its domination on the world's racetracks with the famous 917s in long and short version. But a sudden change in regulations forced the constructor to review its strategy. Porsche set out to conquer the increasingly popular Interserie and CanAm championships. For the occasion, the 917 was converted into a spyder, with settings adapted to sprint races, altogether different from the endurance races where the car used to shine. The 917 thus joined a long and prestigious line of Porsche spyders, which began with the 550 and culminated with the 908 /03, winner of the Targa Florio in 1970. At the outset, the 917 spyder, light and easy to handle, lacked a little power compared to its competitors, especially in the CanAm races. Porsche responded immediately and took the gamble of supercharging. The 917 became the very first race car to use turbocharging technology. And the gamble proved to be a resounding success: the 917/10 and 917/30 with their twin turbochargers (one per cylinder bank) generated more than 1,000 hp and were the most powerful cars ever assembled for a race. Once again, Porsche was unbeatable. In partnership with the Finnish AAW team in the Interserie and the Penske Racing Team in the CanAm, the brand produced several successive championship titles for drivers Leo Kinnunen and Mark Donohue, with very few wins escaping them. At the pinnacle of its glory, the 917/30 regularly achieved lap times worthy of the best Formula 1 cars of the time and earned a reputation as the best race car of all time. In 1975, Mark Donohue set a world speed record at Talladega, averaging 355.848 km/h over several laps. The Porsche 936, which took over in 1976, benefited directly from the experience gained from the 917 and began its career with a double victory in the 24 hours of Le Mans. This illustrated the technological lead of Porsche at that time! But that's another chapter of the story...
