The Porsche 917 was named "Greatest racing car in history" by 50 international motorsport experts and remains for many the ultimate racing car of the early 1970s. In 1971 it won 7 out of 11 World Sportscar Championship races and broke the distance record at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a record it held until 2010.
The Can-Am versions multiplied the victories and won the championship 2 years in a row, in 1972 and 1973. The 1973 Porsche 917/30 was a real monster of power with more than 1100 hp in racing version, and up to 1500 hp on the test bench. Weighing just 800 kg, the 917/30 was so fast it was banned from Can-Am after 1973.
"It's very light, it's very fragile, it's very sensitive to the movements of the steering wheel", declares its pilot Mark Donohue. "Therefore, at those speeds, on that type of track, it's, let's say, very, very blurry." Which did not prevent him from beating the world record for the best lap on a closed circuit two years later, at an average of 355.922 km/h. Record never beaten.
