All of the 917 chassis manufactured by Porsche did not race. The 001 chassis, assembled in early March 1969, was the first of the twenty-nine 917s completed for homologation. It was used as a test chassis at the Nürburgring, before serving as a model for the presentation of the 917 in different Motor Shows. In Geneva in 1969, he proudly wears the number 917. Subsequently, Porsche will keep it and then convert it back into a short chassis, and with the decoration n ° 23 of the 24h of Le Mans 1970, it will be exhibited again, in various motor shows and historical model exhibits.
