Real Model – Porsche 935/78 Moby Dick n° 43 Martini – 24h Le Mans 1978

The Porsche 935/78, nicknamed "Moby Dick," is one of the most extreme race cars developed by Porsche for Group 5 competition. Unveiled in 1978, it was derived from the 911 Turbo and represented a radical evolution of the 935, designed for the World Sportscar Championship. Its massive, elongated bodywork, flattened nose, and wide rear wing earned it its nickname, inspired by the long, white silhouette of the whale from Herman Melville’s novel.

It was powered by an air-cooled, 3.2-liter turbocharged flat-six engine, tuned to produce approximately 845 hp in race trim. With a weight of around 1,025 kg and aerodynamics optimized for high-speed circuits, the 935/78 reached speeds exceeding 360 km/h at Le Mans. The engine was rear-mounted (overhanging the rear axle), while a four-speed manual transmission drove the rear wheels.

The No. 43 Porsche was entered in the 1978 24 Hours of Le Mans by the factory Martini Racing team, driven by Rolf Stommelen and Manfred Schurti. Despite being one of the fastest cars in the field, it was forced to retire during the night due to a mechanical issue. Despite this result, the 935/78 became an icon of late-1970s endurance racing and one of Porsche’s most striking symbols in Group 5.

Miniature – Porsche 935/78 Moby Dick n° 43 Martini 24h Le Mans 1978 1/12 CMR (CMR12003)

This 1:12 scale CMR model replicates the No. 43 Porsche 935/78 "Moby Dick" driven by Stommelen and Schurti at the 1978 24 Hours of Le Mans. It bears the reference number CMR12003.

Its impressive 1:12 scale highlights the "Moby Dick's" distinctive bodywork: a very low nose, massively flared fenders, air intakes, open wheel arches, a huge rear wing, and a long, streamlined tail. The white Martini Racing livery, blue and red stripes, and race number 43 identify the car driven by the German team.
