Willy Kauhsen: the presidential driver. Following his victory at the 300 km Nürburgring Willy Kauhsen was surprised to be contacted by the West German secret service. Had he let some state secret slip? Not at all! He was simply informed that a mysterious individual wanted to take a seat in the now famous yellow Porsche 917/10 in order to experience the thrill of the almost 23 km long Nürburgring.

The person in question was none other than the president of the Federal Republic of Germany, a true motorsport enthusiast. The President was very impressed by the performance of the Porsche 917, which was reputed to be the fastest racing car of the time, and a German one to boot.

The meeting was set up for the following day, but as everyone knows, the weather in the Eifel Mountains is notorious for being capricious. Thus, the next morning, when the president arrived on the scene, flanked by a fleet of fat Mercedes belonging to the secret police and some military trucks, the circuit was covered with 5 cm of fresh snow.

However there was no question of chickening out! So here is the Porsche mounted on slicks , including its two passengers, headed for the onslaught of the big circuit, followed by an armada of official vehicles. We don't know how Kauhsen managed it, but he succeeded in completing a full lap without leaving the track, which certainly wasn't the case for several of the police cars and one of the trucks. Clearly not just anyone can be a pilot!
