The 917 Gulf JWA No. 2 of the 1971 season was no more in its infancy. The chassis had been used the previous year at the 24h of Le Mans and during the shooting of the movie "Le Mans" by Steve McQueen. Rodriguez and Oliver drove it to victory in the second race of the World Championship, at Daytona Beach, after finishing second in the first event in Buenos Aires. In the third event, at Sebring, the 917 could once again claim victory, until this unfortunate crash with Donohue's Ferrari. With its front part "repaired", she began a nice recovery to 4th place.
