Upon joining Daimler, Ferdinand Porsche was tasked with building a racing car. The primary objective was victory in the Prinz Heinrich race, reserved for production cars and held on the roads of the Austro-Hungarian Empire starting in 1909. This seemed a daunting challenge for Porsche, whose creations were already capable of reaching 185 km/h.
The initial models showed promise, despite some technical choices that weren't always finalized, but ultimately, a Mercedes won the inaugural race. Since Mercedes was then Daimler's German subsidiary, only Ferdinand Porsche was truly frustrated by the defeat. He had to fight to establish a new, improved version of his racing car. His gamble paid off: the following year, in 1910, the new cars designed by Porsche swept the top three spots in the Prinz Heinrich Cup, with the first Mercedes finishing seventh. Great satisfaction for the engineer, but also for the driver: Ferdinand Porsche was driving the winning car! But the event would contribute to precipitating the split between the two branches of Daimler, weakening them both.
