When Ferdinand Porsche decided to study electricity in 1893, the work of Edison and Tesla was still groundbreaking. The young man found himself at the heart of a true industrial revolution. And in 1897, at the age of 22, he built his first electric motor for the Béla Egger company in Vienna.

This allowed him to attract the attention of the coachbuilder Jakob Lohner & Co., which had begun automobile production the previous year and, tired of its setbacks with gasoline engines, hired the young engineer to develop this promising powertrain. The first prototypes appeared as early as 1898, but it was with the Lohner-Porsche Model 27, equipped with an electric motor in each front wheel and presented at the 1900 Paris Exposition, that Ferdinand Porsche's creative genius was revealed.

The car had a range of 80 km and was quickly followed by a four-wheel-drive racing version, the ‘Toujours Contente’ (or ‘Semper Vivus’), powered by four electric hub motors. This version was acquired at the time by an English gentleman driver, and an exact replica is currently on display at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart.
