In 1969, despite its undeniable success, the Porsche 911 is not enough to ensure its builder the durability it seeks. Eager to return to more affordable cars, as was the 356, Porsche partners with Volkswagen to create the VW-Porsche 914, available with the four-cylinder in the VW range and with the 6-cylinder in the Porsche range.

Quickly the French coachbuilder Brissonneau & Lotz, who makes small series of crates for major European brands (the Opel GT, for example), but also railroad trains and locomotive bodies, puts its design office, with such talented designers as Paul Bracq and Jacques Cooper (creator of the style of the first TGV), at work on the base of the all-new Porsche 914.

The resulting design is elegant and the management of Brissonneau & Lotz acquires a Porsche 914-6, to build the car. However, the financial difficulties lead to the cancellation of the project and the author of the original drawing, Jacques Cooper turns to Henri Heuliez, who sees an opportunity to bring some fame to his company. The Porsche 914-6 made by Heuliez is called Murène (Moray), and is exhibited in October 1970 at the Paris Motor Show where it is a great success, its elegance contrasting with the trench line of the 914 series.

Historically, this car marks the very first steps of Heuliez, traditionally confined to utilities, in the automotive field, and his first appearance at the Paris Motor Show. However, the project did not interest Porsche, and Heuliez did not take the risk to launch alone in its marketing. Which instantly made the Porsche 914-6 Murène prototype a collector car, all the more rare as the special models based on Porsche 914 are not legion !
