The 1000 km of Spa took place just three weeks after the death of Manfred Winkelhock in a racing accident. Midway through Stefan Bellof, the defending champion, finds himself in the fight with the 1982 and 1983 champions, Jacky Ickx. At the bottom of the hill, in an attempt to overtake, Bellof touches the Belgian driver's car and the two Porsche 956s are propelled towards the safety rails. Ickx's car hit the wall on the right-back side, while Bellof crashed into the barriers and hit a wall. His car catches fire and despite the efforts of Ickx and the security agents, then firefighters and the Brun team, Bellof remains stuck in the wreck for forty minutes, and is declared dead ten minutes later.
