The 1964 Cabriolet Karmann 901 is the second oldest 901 (911 to come) existing. With its chassis No. 13360, it is the only 901 prototype convertible ever manufactured. This unique car represents Porsche's desire to offer a replacement for the 356 convertible, well equipped but too expensive.
In 1964, chassis No. 13360, one of the prototypes 901, is entrusted to Karmann who cut the roof and reinforce the chassis. At the beginning of September, the prototype of 901 convertible returns to Porsche, for intensive tests. The 901 has been designed and manufactured as a closed car, and a lot of problems arise. Due to a lack of time to make a convertible ready for mass production , Porsche engineers will finally modify a coupe with a soft rear window and a removable roof panel: the famous Targa, presented in 1967.
The convertible prototype is then sold to German collector and pilot Manfred Freisinger of Karlsruhe, after he got Porsche's agreement to save this unique prototype from destruction. It has remained in its original state since then, apart from a restoration of its 2 liters flat 6 original engine in 2001.
