The name Porsche is often synonymous with mechanical simplicity and efficiency. Yet it is a relatively complex engine that has helped the brand establish its reputation in motorsports in the early 50s.

Often regarded as the first 100% Porsche engine, the 547 type designed by Ernst Fuhrmann in 1952 is indeed of a very sophisticated design, imposed by the constraints of the time. To remain compact, while offering the performance demanded by the competition service, this small four-cylinder aluminum alloy block of 1.5 liter has the distinction of having 4 coverhead camshafts, powered by a system of nine trees with fourteen referrals angle, and a double ignition. It exploits all the possibilities of modern race engines including a four-stage crankshaft, dry sump lubrication and a double-entry turbine for cooling.

In the end, for any complex that it is, this engine perfectly met the requirements of Ferdinand Porsche in terms of rightsizing, a technique that consists in obtaining maximum power from a reduced displacement. The 60 hp of the 356 was transformed into 110 hp then 135 hp in the Porsche 550, the first car to be equipped with this cleverly designed engine. As early as 1953, Huschke von Hanstein, the boss of the Porsche Racing Service, enthusiastically and quietly entered the 550 in different races, and the good results and victories followed one another: at the Nürburgring, at Le Mans, at the Carrera Panamericana, at the Targa Florio, the Mille Miglia ... The small Porsches competed with the bigger cars and quickly earned the nickname "Giant killer".

Of course, 547 engine manufacturing required much time, and even much more time, as well as carefully selected mechanicians. But it was the price to pay for efficiency and reliability, and one could quickly find this engine mounted on Porsche 356 1500 GS Carrera competition cars and different models of 718, until 804 and 904 in modified versions developing up to 190hp . For 10 years, between 1954 and 1964, the Fuhrmann engine allowed Porsche to reinforce its reputation as a small who is not afraid of the big ones, to continue to build an image of technological excellence, and to reap a capital of sympathy still intact nowadays.

For the reproduction of the type 547 engine at 1/3 scale, the brand opened its archives to John Anson, specialized engineer, so that he develops an object at once playful and easy to mount, and which renders justice to the sophistication of the original model. The kit does not require any glue, and the transparent parts allow to see the operation of the mechanics in a particularly detailed way. The kit received the blessing of the Porsche Museum, which also provided the sound of the engine: a recording of the Fuhrmann that equips the Spyder Panamericana exhibited in Zuffenhausen.
