The Renault Super 5 GT Turbo, launched in 1985, is the sporty version of the Supercinq, designed to directly compete with the Peugeot 205 GTI and to succeed the R5 Alpine/Alpine Turbo. Based on the three-door Super 5 body, it features the 1.4-liter "Cléon Fonte" four-cylinder engine (C1J) boosted by a Garrett T2 turbocharger running at 0.7 bar with an air-to-air intercooler, producing 115 hp and 16.8 mkg of torque in the first phase.
Weighing only 830 kg, the GT Turbo accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 8.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of nearly 197–200 km/h, making it one of the most powerful hot hatches of its era. Aesthetically, the Mk1 (phase 1) is recognizable by its specific unpainted bumpers, widened fenders, 13-inch alloy wheels, gradient side decals with a red stripe, and a single body-colored rearview mirror, while the interior remains quite spartan and dark, in keeping with the spirit of Renault's popular sports cars.
