Unveiled in 1997 and launched in 1998, the Volkswagen Golf IV marked a significant evolution for the German compact car. With cleaner, tauter lines than the Golf III, a marked improvement in perceived quality, and a galvanized body, it positioned the Golf in a more premium segment. The GTI retained the classic front-wheel-drive hot hatch formula but offered a more mature, versatile interpretation: less radical in appearance than some previous generations, it prioritized build quality, everyday comfort, and easily accessible performance.
The 1998 Golf IV GTI is powered by a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder, 20-valve turbo petrol engine. With a displacement of 1,781 cc, it produces 150 hp at 5,700 rpm and 210 Nm of torque from as low as 1,750 rpm. Mated to a five-speed manual transmission, it drives the front wheels, allowing the three-door hatchback to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds and reach a claimed top speed of 216 km/h. Its low-end torque gives it a smooth, efficient character—more understated yet significantly more modern than the naturally aspirated GTIs that came before it.
The GTI features specific bumpers, alloy wheels, a radiator grille with red trim, and a sportier interior. Yet, it retains a very clean silhouette; this very understatement explains why it was long underrated before gradually gaining recognition as an appealing example of the hot hatches of the late 1990s. Volkswagen later expanded the GTI family with variants such as the 150 hp GTI TDI and the V5, but the 150 hp 1.8T remains the iconic launch version.
