Produced from August 1983 to December 1992, the Volkswagen Golf II represents one of the most significant generations of this German compact car. While more spacious, better protected against corrosion, and more versatile than the original Golf, it retained an instantly recognizable silhouette: a highly upright two-box body, a massive C-pillar, a practical hatchback, and compact proportions. Volkswagen manufactured over 6.3 million units, illustrating the immense success of this second generation.
The 1990 Golf Champion was a special edition based on the Golf II. It arrived during a period when Volkswagen was offering numerous trim editions designed to revitalize the model's appeal as it neared the end of its production run. Unlike the GTI or GTI 16S, the "Champion" badge signified a specific trim level rather than a full-fledged sports model. It combined the Golf II’s practical nature and build quality with a more upscale specification and a refined appearance.
The Golf II retained a front-wheel-drive, transverse-engine layout, available with various four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines depending on the market. In 1990, the 1.8-litre petrol versions offered between 85 and 105 hp—depending on the specific variant—and were paired with a five-speed manual transmission. The car measured approximately 3.99 m in length, 1.67 m in width, and 1.42 m in height, with a wheelbase of 2.47 m. Its simple, robust, and practical design explains why it remains a highly appreciated "youngtimer."
