The classic Porsche 911 rolled off the assembly line in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen in four air-cooled model series. The book entitled "Luftgekühlt" concerns the third generation, which was produced in the model years 1989 to 1994. With the 964, porsche would go on to make automotive history. The 911 Carrera 4 was launched in the autumn of 1988, just in time for the 25th Anniversary of the first unveiling of the 911. After the 16-year-plus production run of the G-Model, 85 percent of the 964 was completely new. The Carrera 4 took the concept of the rear-mounted, air-cooled boxer engine, which had previously been pronounced dead, and catapulted it into the present with state-of-the-art technology. As the first production sports car with all-wheel drive, it would be no exaggeration to say that the Carrera 4 was way ahead of its time.

With the 964 generation, Porsche's most important car would also finally take its rightful place in the in-house racing series. In the Carrera Cup, the 964 was able to showcase its talents on even the most demanding of race tracks. In response to the increasingly popular Carrera Cup, in february 1991 porsche announced the launch of only the second ever edition of the legendary 911 Carrera RS.
