Retractable headlights

The Ferrari Testarossa Monospecchio (sometimes incorrectly spelled Monospeccio, nicknamed "flying mirror" in English) refers to the very first Testarossa models produced around 1984–1986, recognizable by a single rearview mirror positioned very high on the left (driver's side) pillar, almost at roof level. This positioning, adopted to optimize rear visibility and comply with certain regulatory requirements in different markets, gave the version its name (mono = one, specchio = mirror). These early examples retain several launch-specific features: center-lock wheels (Monodado), a detail later abandoned in favor of five-bolt wheels on subsequent series; some interior elements inherited from the 512 BBi; and some minor finishing touches specific to the beginning of production. Technically, the Monospecchio retains the iconic architecture of the Testarossa: a 4.9L flat-12 engine in a mid-rear position, fuel injection (F113 family), with power outputs varying according to market (around 390 hp in the European version), a 5-speed manual gearbox, lateral cooling with large radiators in the sides and the famous horizontal air intakes designed by Pininfarina, a wide rear track and very pronounced 1980s proportions. Evolution: from 1986, Ferrari standardized two lower mirrors and, a few years later, 5-lug wheels became the norm; hence the names used by enthusiasts: Monospecchio for the single high-mounted mirror (often still called Monodado), then Monodado with two low mirrors, and finally the more “classic” Testarossa with five lugs. Because it was only produced in small quantities over a short period and embodies the most radical features of the initial design, the Monospecchio is highly sought after: it represents the launch version of the Testarossa, immediately identifiable by its single high rearview mirror and center-lock wheels, a synthesis of the model's beginnings and the heritage of the 512 BBi before later standardizations.
