The white Ferrari Testarossa from the series Miami Vice is undoubtedly one of the most iconic cars in 1980s automotive and television culture.
In its first two seasons (1984–1986), the series used a black Ferrari Daytona Spyder… which was actually a replica built on a Corvette chassis. Ferrari, unhappy to see an imitation on screen, offered a collaboration: the company delivered two brand-new, genuine Testarossas to the set, painted white specifically for the series.
These cars appear from season 3 (1986) onward, when the fake Daytona is destroyed on screen by a Stinger missile fired by Crockett and Tubbs.
Aesthetic characteristics :
Color : Ferrari did not officially offer the Testarossa in white at its launch. The two examples intended for Miami Vice were therefore repainted white (Bianco) at the request of producer Michael Mann, to better stand out in the night scenes and on Miami's dark asphalt.
Pininfarina design : wide and low body, with the famous "strakes" (or horizontal louvers) covering the side air intakes, which became a visual signature of the model.
Mirrors : these were versions with dual low-profile mirrors, therefore not the very first "Monospecchio" (single-sided mirrors) but already a production evolution.
Wheels : center-lock wheels (Monodado), characteristic of Testarossas from the first half of the 1980s.
Technical spécifications :
Engine : 4.9L flat-12 (type F113), Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, approximately 390 hp in the European version, slightly less for the American specification (around 380 hp).
Transmission : 5-speed manual.
Performance : Top speed of approximately 290 km/h, 0 to 100 km/h in about 5.3 seconds, making it one of the fastest cars of its time.
Architecture : Mid-rear longitudinal engine, wide rear track for stability, and cooling via side radiators (hence its spectacular ">Role in the series :
Driven by Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson), the Testarossa became a true character in Miami Vice.
Its white paint and futuristic design perfectly matched the series' aesthetic: light-colored suits, Miami neon lights, electronic music (Jan Hammer), and nighttime settings.
It symbolized the luxury, power, and danger associated with Crockett's life undercover in the drug world.
The car helped solidify the Testarossa's image as an icon of the 1980s, just like the Rolex watches and Armani suits worn by the heroes.
Legacy and Current Value :
The two original white Testarossas from Miami Vice are now highly sought-after collector's items.
They have been sold at auction, with one fetching over $600,000 a few years ago, well above the typical value of a Testarossa.
More broadly, this television appearance helped establish the Testarossa as a symbol of the 1980s, associated with glamour, excess, and pop culture.
