Abstract :

A well documented book, in which the author Laurent Gauvin, autopsies each chasssis to extract the least historical, human and technical details. A summary of each track record and anecdotes of pilots and owners who have lent themselves to the confidence.

Excerpt :

"But the general surprise comes at the time of the race of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Indeed, # 917/020-001 appears all pink with patterns representing all the pieces of meat of the pig that can be found in butcher shops.
At the origin of this decoration, the former head of design Porsche, Anatole LAPINE and his right arm, the Australian designer Dick Soderberg. The inspiration came to them because of the chubby aspect of the 917. The two men pushed the detail quite far since dotted lines represent each part of the body of a pig: Rüssel (trunk), Ohrlappen (lobe of the ear), Hirn (brain), Hals (backbone), Rückenspeck (backfat), Kotelett (ribs), Lende (loin), Schulter (shoulder), Schinken (ham), Rippe (rib), Haxen (hock), Wamme (belly) and Schwanz (tail).
This Porsche is entered by Team Martini Racing under the direction of Hans-Dieter Dechent. But Comte Rossi discovering this decoration, returns in a frenzied anger and prohibits the installation of stickers Martini on the car, not wanting to dirty the image of his brand. He is so furious that he immediately leaves the circuit.
During the practice session, # 917/020-001, hit with number 23, appears to be the fastest car. However, Reinhold Jost and Willi Kauhsen at the wheel qualifies in 7th position. For the start of the race, the two drivers, having not received any particular instructions, choose to complete a wise race. From 9th place at the end of the first hour, the 100% German team is in 3rd place from the seventh hour. # 917/020-001 is then neck and neck with the Ferrari 512 M duo Juncadella / Vaccarella. But two incidents of course are demoted the pink pig. The Porsche almost loses 7 minutes to tighten the cooling turbine and 12 minutes to repair the throttle cable. So that at the eleventh hour, # 917/020-001 is 5th in four rounds of the Rodriguez / Oliver leaders on the Porsche 917 L (# 917 043). But shortly before mid-race, around 3:30 am, Reinhold Jost loses control of the Porsche Arnage side when braking when he was 3rd. The car drives violently to the right, hitting the sandbank and spinning. The 917 finishes on the lower right side of the track by tapping a pole. Jost is unscathed.
For a long time, the abandonment was considered a fault of control while Reinhold Jost always affirmed the opposite."
