Gerhard Mitter was already double European champion of hillclimb, with the Porsche 910 Bergspyder, when the factory entrusted him the new 909 Bergspyder. Lighter, more powerful, the 909 was developed to counter the new Ferrari. But the drivers preferred the 910, which the Ferrari proved to be unable to beat.
For the last two races of the season, Gaysberg and Mont Ventoux, the Porsche drivers had the choice between the 910 and the 909. Rolf Stommelen chooses the 909, but fails to beat Gerhard Mitter and the 910. At Mont Ventoux, Mitter even exploded the record of the previous year by more than 40 seconds. He had been used the 909 only during pre-race practice.
The following year, Porsche put an end to its hillclimb racing program, making the 909 a mythical car instantly.
