The Lotus 98T was the Formula 1 car fielded by Team Lotus in 1986. Designed by Gérard Ducarouge, it featured a carbon-fiber and Kevlar monocoque chassis and sported the famous black-and-gold John Player Special livery. It was powered by a mid-rear-mounted Renault EF15B 1.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine. Its power output exceeded 900 hp during races and could go much higher in qualifying; the car weighed only around 540 kg.
Ayrton Senna drove the No. 12 Lotus at the 1986 United States Grand Prix, held on the streets of Detroit on June 22. Starting from pole position, he won the race after 63 laps—finishing in 1:51:12.847—ahead of Jacques Laffite. Despite a drop in pace caused by a deflating tire, the Brazilian also set the fastest lap of the race. This success marked his fourth Formula 1 victory and his first in the United States.
