The real model – 141-R Mikado Type Locomotive

The 141-R is a Mikado-type (1-4-1) steam locomotive delivered to the SNCF (French National Railways) by North American manufacturers starting in 1945 to rebuild rail traffic after the war. Standardized, robust, and easy to maintain, it develops nearly 3,000 hp, reaches approximately 105 km/h, and hauls both passengers and freight on almost the entire network. Built in over 1,300 units, initially coal-fired and later fuel oil-fired, it accounted for a major share of the freight hauled in France during the 1950s before being gradually replaced by diesel and electric locomotives in the early 1970s. A few units, such as the 141-R 1199, 420, and 1298, are now preserved and restored to working order by associations, testifying to the central role of this engine in French railway history.
