The Story – Jo Siffert

Under the affectionate nickname of Jo Siffert, or Seppi, Joseph Siffert (1936-1971) embodied a form of perseverance and success in the world of motor racing. Born into a modest family in Fribourg's Lower Town – his father was a garage owner – Jo Siffert began competing first on motorcycles. In 1959, he became Swiss champion in the 350cc category. The following year, he took up car racing while continuing to work. He started a used car sales company, which allowed him to finance his passion for automobiles, albeit with difficulty. Jo Siffert dedicated a large part of his career to endurance racing, achieving numerous victories including the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1968 and the 1000 km of Nürburgring in 1968 and 1969. He also started 96 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix between 1962 and 1971. Jo Siffert is one of only three Swiss drivers, along with Clay Regazzoni and Emmanuel de Graffenried, to have won a Formula One race.

On October 24, 1971, he was killed at the wheel of his car during a non-championship Formula One race at Brands Hatch.
