Real Model – Ferrari Dino 196 1959 Press Version

The Ferrari Dino 196 S is a rare 1959 racing spider; reportedly, only two units were ever built. It marks a significant milestone in Ferrari’s history, as it was one of the brand’s first sports cars to feature the "Dino" V6 engine—named in memory of Enzo Ferrari’s son, Alfredo "Dino" Ferrari, who was involved in the early development of this engine type.

Beneath its long front hood lies a 1,983.7 cc, 65-degree V6 engine fed by three Weber 42 DCN carburetors. This engine produces approximately 195 hp at 7,200 rpm. Mounted within a tubular steel chassis, it drives the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. Weighing around 680 kg with a claimed top speed of approximately 250 km/h, the 196 S was a lightweight, highly competitive machine for late-1950s sports car racing.

Its open aluminum bodywork—attributed to Fantuzzi—is distinguished by rounded contours, deeply curved front fenders, a low windshield, and a transparent air intake positioned above the carburetors. This detail reveals the V6’s six intake trumpets and visually sets the 196 S apart from contemporary V12 Ferraris.

Miniature – Ferrari Dino 196 S 1959 Press Version Red 1/18 Tecnomodel (TM18-362A)

This 1:18 scale Tecnomodel Mythos model replicates the Ferrari Dino 196 S in its 1959 press-launch configuration, finished in red. It bears the reference number TM18-362A and is part of the Tecnomodel Mythos collection. Crafted from resin, this static model highlights the exquisite lines of the Fantuzzi bodywork: the oval grille, curvaceous fenders, stripped-back two-seat cockpit, wire wheels, and—above all—the transparent air intake that reveals the Dino V6 engine's intake system. The 1:18 scale is particularly well-suited to this car, as it showcases the intricate details of the engine bay and interior of this 1950s Italian prototype.
