Launched in 1968, the Nissan Skyline C10 earned the nickname "Hakosuka"—a Japanese portmanteau of *hako* (box) and *Suka* (short for Skyline)—due to its angular lines and distinctive proportions. It was available as a sedan, wagon, or coupe, with engine options ranging from a 1.5-liter four-cylinder to a 2.0-liter six-cylinder.
The version that cemented its legendary status was the Skyline 2000 GT-R, introduced in 1969. Its 1,989 cc S20 six-cylinder engine—featuring dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder—produced 160 hp at 7,000 rpm, fed by three Mikuni-Solex carburetors. Mated to a five-speed manual transmission, a limited-slip differential, and a rear-wheel-drive layout, the engine allowed this lightweight sports car (weighing approximately 1,120 kg) to reach speeds of 200 km/h.
The C10 GT-R also built a formidable reputation in Japanese racing, securing 50 victories in the early 1970s and establishing the prestige that would define all subsequent generations of the Skyline GT-R.
