First appearance of an official Porsche Formula 1. Derived from the 718 F2, the single-seater kept the 4-cylinder 170 hp engine while waiting for the 8-cylinder engine still under study. Driven by Dan Gurney, it finished 10th in the 1961 Dutch Grand Prix.

In 1962, Ben Pon took part in his first Grand Prix at the wheel of a Porsche 787, a single-seater derived from a 718 F2 (identical engine) entered by the Maasbergen team. He was thrown out of his car after an accident on the second lap and ended up in a shrub, thus retiring from single-seater racing.
