The Porsche 911 ST 2.3 is a lightweight competition version of the 911, developed in the early 1970s for Grand Touring racing. It retains the air-cooled flat-six engine mounted in the rear overhang but features lightweight bodywork, flared fenders, and specific endurance racing modifications. Car No. 44, entered at Le Mans in 1971, was chassis number 911 130 1270, prepared with a 2.3-liter "prototype" engine.
Entered by the Paul Watson Race Organisation and driven by Britons Paul Vestey and Richard Bond, it finished the 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans in a remarkable 12th place overall and 6th in the GTS 2.0–2.5 liter class. Starting 42nd on the grid, it covered 286 laps—a total distance of 3,849.782 km—at an average speed of 160.407 km/h. Competing against five-liter prototypes, this result demonstrates the reliability and efficiency of the 911 ST in endurance racing.
