Au début des années 1980, la direction Porsche réfléchit à son devenir : faut-il la remplacer avant qu'elle ne devienne obsolète ou la moderniser ? Après des débats internes, cette deuxième solution l'emporte. Présentée en 1988 et commercialisée jusqu'en 1993, la « nouvelle » 911 connue en interne sous le code Type 964 comprend, au fil des millésimes, une gamme particulièrement riche et variée.
