Des voitures-catalogues, ou dérivées, aux prototypes les plus évolués, n'étaient-ce point ces machines qui avaient permis à la Targa Florio, au Tourist Trophy, aux 24 heures du Mans et aux Mille Mille de devenir les véritables temples de la course dite d'Endurance ? S'appuyant sur ces grands classiques de la piste et de la route, avec une hiérarchie calquée sur celle de son homologue F1, ce nouveau Championnat connut d'entrée le succès. Répondant à un besoin latent de l'industrie comme de l'artisanat, il révéla ou confirma ses spécialistes dans le même temps où de nombreuses marques, quels que soient leurs moyens ou leurs ambitions, trouvaient là matière à leur épanouissement. Outre l'aspect souvent spectaculaire des confrontations, et parce qu'ils paraissaient plus ou moins directement transportables à la grande ou moyenne série, les progrès réalisés provoquèrent une émulation toujours bénéfique. C'est cette évolution que ce premier volume, après avoir rendu un juste hommage aux précurseurs de la Formule, a voulu retracer et illustrer à travers l'histoire des courses, des machines et des hommes..."
