On découvre particulièrement la métamorphose des studios de style ou de design au fil des années, les principales écoles de design et les fournisseurs de l’industrie automobile, ainsi que les femmes et les hommes qui ont apporté leur contribution à la transformation technologique ou esthétique de la carrosserie : stylistes, designers et ingénieurs.
L’ouvrage met en lumière le travail des carrossiers, fabricants ou restaurateurs de voitures de grand luxe principalement des années 1930, vu de l'intérieur. De la reconstruction de carrosseries à l'armature du bois, garnissage, sellerie, accessoires, tout est passé en revue !
Chaque carrossier a droit à sa notice, parfois réduite à une phrase par manque d’informations, le plus généralement accompagnée d’une ou plusieurs illustrations afin d’admirer son travail. "
