Real Model – Renault Clio 16S 1991
Launched in 1991, the Renault Clio 16S was the first truly sporty version of the Clio, succeeding the Supercinq GT Turbo in Renault’s lineup. It featured a naturally aspirated 1,764 cc F7P four-cylinder engine with dual overhead cams and 16 valves, utilizing multi-point fuel injection. In its initial non-catalyzed version, the engine produced 140 hp at 6,500 rpm and 165 Nm of torque at 4,250 rpm, with power sent to the front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission.
Weighing approximately 975 kg and featuring a precise chassis and highly refined suspension geometry, the 16S achieved a top speed of 212 km/h and accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds, according to manufacturer figures.
The introduction of a catalytic converter in late 1992 reduced power to 137 hp; the model was subsequently renamed the "16V" in 1994, a designation it retained until production ended in 1996. While less dramatic than its successor, the Clio Williams, the 16S is now recognized as a benchmark among French compact sports cars of the 1990s.
