Launched in June 1976, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk1 truly invented the modern hot hatch formula: a lightweight three-door body, a spirited engine, and everyday versatility. It was powered by a 110 hp, 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine featuring Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection—borrowed from the Audi 80 GTE—and mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Weighing just 810 kg, it reached a top speed of 182 km/h and accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.2 seconds—remarkable performance for a compact family car of that era. With approximately 462,000 units produced up to 1983, this first GTI firmly established a three-letter badge that has since become a global benchmark.
