The Story – François Cevert

François Cevert was a French racing driver nicknamed "The Prince" for his kindness and his movie-star looks. Destined for a brilliant Formula 1 career in the 1970s, he died at the age of 29 following a crash during qualifying for the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, the site of his first victory two years earlier.

Born on February 25, 1944, in Paris, François Cevert could have become an actor, but he chose a much riskier path: motor racing. Upon returning from his military service, this 22-year-old driving ace won the "Volant Shell" competition held at the famous Nevers Magny-Cours circuit. In 1968, he won the French Formula 3 championship. The following year, his talent shone brightly in Formula 2 when he won the Reims Grand Prix, beating none other than Jackie Stewart. Impressed by this feat, Ken Tyrrell recruited the young Frenchman to his Tyrrell Racing team. François Cevert made his Formula One debut in 1971 alongside Jackie Stewart. His first steps were a success, culminating in a victory at the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. The promising young driver honed his skills in Formula One and finished second in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 1973, Jackie Stewart's model teammate had a more than promising season with no fewer than seven podium finishes. On the sidelines of the final race of the season at Watkins Glen, François Cevert was involved in a crash during qualifying. This tragic accident claimed the life of the 29-year-old driver on October 6, 1973, a day that has become a day of mourning for motorsport.
