The Lancia Delta S4 No. 7 driven by Henri Toivonen and Sergio Cresto won the 1986 Monte Carlo Rally, imposing its superiority on snow and ice thanks to an exceptional pace.
Technically, the S4 was a powerhouse of innovation: a 1.8L four-cylinder twin-charged engine (supercharger + turbo) delivering around 450–500 hp in competition trim, mid-engine longitudinal layout, tubular chassis and all-wheel drive—a formula that gave it formidable power-to-weight ratio and traction on mixed surfaces.
The Monte Carlo victory was one of several WRC successes for the Delta S4 in 1985–86, but the model's career remains tragically associated with the deaths of Toivonen and Cresto in the 1986 Tour de Corse, an accident that precipitated the end of the Group B era and permanently changed rally regulations.
