The Maserati MC12 GT1 is the racing version of the MC12, developed starting in 2004 to mark Maserati’s return to the FIA GT Championship. It features a carbon-fiber and Nomex honeycomb monocoque chassis combined with aluminum subframes. Its naturally aspirated 6.0-liter V12 engine—derived from the Ferrari Enzo unit and mounted mid-rear—is mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox driving the rear wheels.
Its impressive bodywork, significantly longer than that of the road-going MC12, is designed with aerodynamics in mind: a front splitter, large air intakes, a diffuser, and a massive rear wing work together to stabilize the car at high speeds. The MC12 GT1 quickly dominated its class, securing the FIA GT1 Constructors' title in 2005, Vitaphone Team titles in 2005 and 2006, the Drivers' title for Michael Bartels and Andrea Bertolini in 2006, and back-to-back victories at the 24 Hours of Spa in 2005 and 2006.
The 2006 season confirmed this dominance: Bartels and Bertolini won three races with the No. 1 car—including the 24 Hours of Spa—while Vitaphone won five out of ten rounds.
