Norbert Singer - Porsche Racing 1970-2004

"The gearbox of the 917 must survive the 24 hours of Le Mans at a healthy temperature. The cooling must not create any additional air resistance. So: do it". That, in essence, was the first assignment for Norbert Singer, a fresh graduate in space and automotive engineering, when he began working on Porsche's race development in the spring of 1970.

As we know, the gearbox held, Porsche won the race, and Norbert Singer remained loyal to the Swabians for decades to come. Our publishing house is now publishing the life memories of the legendary racing engineer: "Norbert Singer - My Racing Life with Porsche 1970 - 2004". Originally conceived as a translation of an earlier English title, the book manuscript developed into a rich and detailed autobiography after numerous discussions between Norbert Singer and author Wilfried Müller.

In 16 chapters and over 350 pages, Singer describes the greatest era of Porsche motor racing from his point of view. That is, from the point of view of the visionary racing engineer and aerodynamicist, the astute interpreter of the rules and the tactician. From the 917 to the 911 Carrera RSR to the world champion Porsche 935 - a radical interpretation of the 911 theme, which resulted in the lightest (735 kg) and fastest (366 km/h) 911 in history. Singer also recounts the one-two punch that led to the three-time Le Mans-winning Porsche 936.

As with the Carrera RSR Turbo and the 935, he was the project manager for the Porsche 956. The result made Porsche and racing history: Singer's team succeeded in making the aerodynamic "ground effect", known from Formula 1, usable in two-seater racing prototypes - the temporary culmination of Singer's passionate research into downforce. Drivers such as Jacky Ickx, Stefan Bellof, Derek Bell, Jochen Mass and Hans-Joachim Stuck achieved previously unattainable cornering speeds with cars developing up to 800 horsepower, among others in five drivers' world championships.

At the same time, Porsche ventured into uncharted - and, as it turned out, difficult - territory with a single-seater for the American CART series. Singer also describes here what happened from the point of view of the insider. On the other hand, it is with palpable pleasure that he recalls the artistic transformation of a racing prototype into a Gran Turismo, which won at Le Mans in 1994 as the Porsche 962 LM GT1. In 1996, a team led by Singer put together the first mid-engine 911, and two years later one of those cars also won at Le Mans. It was Porsche's 16th success in the world's most famous endurance race. Singer participated in all of these races as an engineer, but also as a strategist and tactician in the box for most of them.
