Ecurie Ecosse is a Scottish motorsport team founded in 1952 by David Murray, a driver and businessman from Edinburgh. Older than John Wyer's J.W.A., but just as legendary, its track record and the characteristic color of its cars, a very dark blue, have marked the memory and minds of classic car racing fans.
When he created Ecurie Ecosse, David Murray had already ended his racing career, which included participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and several Formula 1 Grand Prix. An accomplished businessman, he created Merchiston Motors, a specialized automobile garage. With his clients Ian Stewart and Bill Dobson, both racing drivers, and chief mechanic Wilkie Wilkinson they decided to create a private motorsport team.
The team quickly focused on sports and endurance car racing, with Jaquar XK120s and then Jaguar C-types. In 1955, the team entered Jaguar D-Types in British races and won a few victories. During the first appearance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in 1956, victory was achieved for the D-type, despite the participation of the factory Jaguars. In 1957, Ecurie Ecosse, with two D-Types, achieved the double. This was the third victory in a row for the Jaguar brand, the fifth in seven seasons.
As an unexpected consequence of the double at the 24h of Le Mans, the number of members of the supporters' club, the Ecurie Ecosse Association, increased spectacularly. Members, including many professionals from the Scottish motor industry and trade, were keen to provide whatever support they can and had a one-off transporter designed and built to replace the two aging transporters used since the early days of the team.
The transporter was put into service in 1959 with additional funding from the Ecurie Ecosse association. Head designer Selby Howgate, a true enthusiast, delivered a project that is breathtaking in concept and execution. The carrier has an enclosed lower deck at the front with berths, a mini-workshop and space for one car. Hydraulic ramps allow two more cars to be raised to the upper level which extends above the cabin.
The Ecurie Ecosse transporter arouses admiration wherever it goes while Ecurie Ecosse continues to enter the D-Type and then the Lister and Tojeiro with Jaguar engines. Wilkie Wilkinson's contribution to the development of these cars, as well as the exclusivity of the carrier, meant that Ecurie Ecosse was considered in 1960 practically as a manufacturer in its own right. In 1971 the team was finally dissolved, the transporter was sold as well as the cars, chassis and engines of the now ex-Ecurie Ecosse.
In the space of ten seasons, Ecurie Ecosse achieved sixty-eight competition victories, including two successes at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1956 and 1957 with Jaguar D-Types. The project, relaunched in the mid-1980s by Hugh McCaig and Ray Mallock, enjoyed some success at the World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in Group C. It was around this time that the transporter was rediscovered and fully restored (3000 hours!) by specialist Jaguar Lynx on behalf of Dick Skipworth, one of the biggest supporters of Ecurie Ecosse.
Today, the Ecurie Ecosse transporter is as resplendent as ever.
