Porsche applied turbocharging to its racing cars in 1972, and within a year the technology was spreading to its production cars: the first road-going 911 Turbo was unveiled at the motor show from Frankfurt in 1973. Johnny Tipler tells the story of the turbocharged, air-cooled 911, starting with the 934 and 935 race cars that culminated in the Type 930 in 1974. The 930 accounted for more than 21,000 vehicle sales before to be replaced by the 964 Turbo in 1990, followed by the 993 Turbo in 1995. In addition to its 300 color photos, many of which were taken specially by the famous photographer Antony Fraser, this book offers exclusive interviews with Klaus Ludwig, Jochen Mass and Nick Heidfeld, and includes comprehensive specification tables for each key model type.
Johnny Tipler is an automotive journalist and author of over 30 sports-focused books. He ran the JPS Motorsport press office for three years, chronicling the adventures of Team Lotus then sponsored by JPS. He was also an associate of the Motor Industry Research Unit, deputy editor of Restoring Classic Cars, deputy editor of CarWeek from 1993 to 1995 and editor of Land Rover Owner International in 1996. He was a regular contributor to 911 & Porsche World, Land Magazines Rover Owner, Octane and Lotus Club International. His reporting includes sports model reviews, interviews with key industry figures, sporting events (eg Carrera Panamericana), buying guides and historical articles.
