At the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Ferrari 250 GTO established itself as the new queen of GT racing: chassis Nos. 19 and 22 finished second and third overall, while dominating the 3.0-liter Grand Touring class thanks to the 3.0L Colombo V12 engine and refined aerodynamics. In addition to this one-two finish, another 250 GTO entered by the North American Racing Team placed seventh, confirming the model's ability to race at a pace nearly matching the factory Ferrari prototypes.
In the smaller displacement classes, the Zagato-bodied Porsche 356B Carrera GTL Abarth delivered a remarkable performance: Barth and Herrmann drove car No. 34 to seventh place overall and a class victory in the 1.6-liter GT category, while a second Abarth 356B finished 12th overall and second in class. These rear-engined cars demonstrated that a lightweight, efficient design could compensate for significantly lower power output when competing against the large Italian GTs.
Meanwhile, the Maserati Tipo 151 represented the marque's attempt to return to Le Mans with a powerful front-engined V8 coupé designed to challenge Ferrari in the prototype category. Although it impressed with its top speed, the car struggled with reliability and setup issues; failing to achieve a major result in 1962, the Tipo 151 remained a spectacular curiosity rather than a champion on par with the Ferrari 250 GTO.
A Dream Life in Watercolor
Since childhood, Uli Ehret (born in Weinheim, Germany in April 1965) was passionate about cars and painting. At just 16 years old, he began winning national art competitions, and at 21, he opened his own advertising agency.
In 1998, the discovery of watercolor as a medium for depicting racing cars allowed him to make his first breakthrough in art. For his exhibition at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2005, Ehret demonstrated that he had finally found the tool to express dynamism, movement, and vibrations, and that he was now able to represent speed in his paintings. A subtle blend of realistic representation and impressionism. By its very nature, watercolor allows for a representation of movement that can be perceived even in the dust spray from the road and the glow of the brake discs. And the way Ehret utilizes the background adds even more speed to his works.
But his work doesn't stop at this impressionistic style; it is also complemented by the story of a specific race, a driver's life, a competition's high point, or a historical moment in motorsport. Uli Ehret reads extensively about motorsport, both current and historical. His library contains several hundred books on all kinds of cars, drivers, and eras. Thus, a painting doesn't just depict a fast car, but also tells a story about the person behind the wheel or a particular day of racing, filled with historical details.
